5 STRUGGLES FOR GIRLS WITH CURLY HAIR

STRUGGLE 1: Brushing your hair is a big NO, NO!

Brushing your hair can mess up the curl pattern and create huge amount of unwanted frizz. The best thing to do is de-tangle your hair in the shower. Use a good amount of conditioner, then use a wide tooth comb to remove any knots and tangles. Stay away from the brush!

STRUGGLE 2: You hair always feels dry

You hair never feels "normal" right? Dryer and coarser than usual, this is completely normal for curly hair. Try and use products to help even out your hair’s porosity, us curly girls have very porous hair which means it sucks up a lot of moisture.

STRUGGLE 3: You have to get up hours before everyone else to sort out that Maine.

Don't worry there are now plenty of products available to help you get that extra beauty sleep. No blow dry creams are a life saver. They simply style your hair for you, no hot tools, no fuss and definitely no frizz. Hoorah!

STRUGGLE 4: Humidity, just NO.

Any amount of humidity will just flatten and ruin your hair. Whether you've decided to go for a bouncy blow-dry and want that straight life for a while or if your curls are looking perfect any amount of humidity is going to ruin that good hair vibe. Try using hair gels or hair oils to tame the frizz and keep that style looking perfect all day long.

STRUGGLE 5: The wrong haircut can make you look like a poodle.

Book yourself in with a stylist here at Steven & Laurent right now. We know how to make your curls look their very best and can also give you all the advice you need on what products to use on those precious locks.

10 HAIR HACKS YOU NEED TO KNOW

b2ap3_thumbnail_hair-hacks-X_20170531-095149_1.jpg

Hack #1

If you know you're not going to have time to wash your hair in the morning, apply dry shampoo the night before. This is the best time because the dry shampoo will work itself into your strands overnight giving you fresh looking locks and added volume in the morning. Need a new dry shampoo? Try our Shu Uemura Color Lustre Dry Cleaner, it's fab and smells amazing!

Hack #2

Oily hair? Ever wondered why your hair is oily and flat, even after washing? Oily hair attracts a lot of dirt and grease, this is very hard to get rid of with one rinse. Make sure you shampoo your hair twice in the shower to make sure your hair is squeaky clean. Your hair will be left smoother and more voluminous.

Hack #3

Bobby pins constantly sliding out of your hair? Spray them with hairspray for that extra grip. Tip: Always lose your bobby pins? Pop them in a tic tac container to keep them together. Decorate with some washi tape to make it look extra pretty.

Hack #4

If you are scared to try permanent colours but want to try something new then try some fun spray in colours. These are temporary and are perfect for the festival season. While you're at it why not try the glitter parting, glitter makes everything better right?

Hack #5

Flyaways or baby hairs bugging you? Spray a clean mascara wand or toothbrush with some hairspray to tame those flyaways. Nobody wants a sleek pony with random fluffy bits!

Hack #6

Got a date planned and you want to make sure you are smelling extra fabulous? Make your hair smell amazing too by spritzing your hairbrush with your favourite perfume, brush through gently and Voila! Gorgeous smelling locks!

Hack #7

Thin hair-line or greys coming through? Use an eyeshadow close to your hair colour and dust it over the sparse/grey areas. This makes the hair appear thicker and hides those greys for a few more days!

Hack #8

Curly haired girls, swap towels for tees. Towels lead to frizz. Instead, consider opting for a t-shirt to dry your hair and enjoy the benefits of being frizz-free. Give it a try, it really does help!

Hack #9

Always clog the sink when washing your hair? Brush before to get any loose and/or tangled hair out. My husband always thanks me for this!

Hack #10

Hair looking dull, lifeless and a little boring? Come visit us at the salon, we are always here to make you feel amazing!

I hope you enjoyed these hair hacks, I'd love to hear yours!

5 New Winter Hair Colours

Autumn and winter is a great time to switch up your hair colour, traditionally many go darker for the colder months but that doesn't mean you have to. Read this post to hear about some fab new hair colours for winter, I hope they inspire you.

rose gold hair

Rose Gold

Whether it's just a simple hint of rose gold by adding some subtle highlights or the full shebang, this is a huge trend and a pretty one too. We all love a bit of rose gold right? So why not translate that in our hair colour, I actually tried out the rose gold trend earlier on in the year by adding a pretty pink, peach and lilac toner to my hair. It was subtle, pretty and washed out really easily so it's a really fab way to add a temporary bit of colour to you hair.

raven black hair

Raven Black

Ah a classic, if you already have quite dark hair and fancy a change but don't want to go lighter than why not go even further into the dark side and dye your hair a beautiful raven black. Simplistic yet classic, who doesn't want to look like Adriana Lima?!

creamy blonde

Creamy Blonde

Who says you have to go dark in the winter? I'm actually about to lighten up my locks and opt for a creamy blonde this month and I couldn't be more excited. If you are not a fan of completely blonde locks then you can be subtle and go for more of a dark roots blonde ends look, roots are in and they are way easier to maintain so embrace them! White winter snow, blonde tresses and faux fur. I'm there!

sepia hair

Sepia

Sepia, no it's not just an Instagram filter. It's also a very popular hair colour and huge this AW. Think caramel and pink hues with a slight ashy tone. A really simple look to achieve and maintain, gorgeous!

red hair

Born This Way Red

Reds are always huge in the winter but how about switching it up from cherries or magentas and go for a true-born this way red, against softer and porcelain complexions this is just a stunning look. So natural yet very eye-catching, warm and inviting.

Will you be switching up your colour for AW?

5 FESTIVAL BRAIDS YOU CAN TOTALLY DIY

 coachella hair

Festival season is almost upon us and with Coachella happening right now and all of the other major festivals just around the corner I thought it would be a great time to share my favourite festival worthy braids. When it comes to festival hair many of us seem to go down the flower crown route but that's not always the easiest or most practical, I mean who wants to be dancing around trying to keep a crown on their head? Braids are super quick and easy to do and you also get two styles in one because once you let those braids loose you are going to be left with gorgeous wavy tresses!

BEDHEAD PIGTAIL BRAIDS
Feeling lazy, no worries with this style the messier the better! Grab some surf spray to add some more texture and get braiding. The looser the better, a super sexy and easy look to achieve.

BRAIDED CROWN
Although we are steering away from flower crowns don't be afraid to try the braided crown, it's a very gorgeous look and it's the best look for keeping hair out of the face. Ideal for those that like to wear their hair up but fancy an added festival vibe.

BEACHY BABY BRAIDS AND WAVES
Embrace those natural waves or if you haven't got much movement try using the Bumble Don't Blow It styling cream to enhance your natural wave. Add some baby plaits sporadically, you can do this anywhere and even create your own braided hairband for added cuteness!

BRAIDED BRAID
Braid within a braid is a super clever way to make you look like you've spend a lot of time but really you haven't. It looks super complicated but is actually a very simple style to achieve and so many styles you could do too, how about braidy buns!
festival hair

Top 3 Bumble and Bumble products to take on your festival adventure:
Tame frizz with Surf Infusion
Create natural, soft waves with Don't Blow It
Keep it fresh with Pret-a-powder

Need some more tips with your festival hair? Ask in the salon for more, we can even give you a festival colour that will make you stand out in the crowd!

Olaplex No.3, is it worth the hype?

olaplexno3

You all know I'm a huge fan of the Olaplex treatment, I've been having it for quite some time now in fact probably around 7 months or so but I have only recently tried out the No.3 at home treatment so thought I'd share with you all what I think of it today and if it's worth the hype it's been getting.

WHAT IS THE OLAPLEX NO. 3 HAIR PERFECTOR?
"Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector is your client’s retail portion of the Olaplex System and contains the same active ingredient as both the No.1 and No. 2. This enables the client to repair and maintain strong, healthy hair in between services as it continues to link bonds within the hair." Olaplex

Olaplex No.3 is an at home treatment that is recommended to use once a week, I have been doing as recommended and apply it to damp hair before washing and leave it on for around 10 minutes and sometimes even longer if I have things to do around the house, it's not a leave in conditioning treatment so always wash it off. My hair is blonde and coloured regularly so I have been after something to give it that extra boost between colours and really give it some life and shine, my hair is also naturally quite wavy and therefore I straighten it a lot so it's constantly got heat on it which isn't great which is why I always opt for Olaplex in the salon.

How my hair has changed since using the No.3 at home treatment is pretty incredible, I have added shine to my hair which I never thought I could achieve and the curl that had almost vanished has bounced back! I can now wear my hair natural without it looking like a frizzy mess, it's definitely down to the Olaplex because I have been using the same styling products throughout and the main difference began when I started No.3 at home so the answer to your question, is Olaplex No.3 worth the hype? Yes it most definitely is, I'd highly recommend it and would suggest giving it a whirl next time you opt for the Olaplex treatment it's definitely an added treat and will really give your hair a new lease of life.

Have you tried Olaplex yet?

5 Bumble & Bumble Hair Products to Try This Year

Hey guys, Happy New Year to you all! What a wonderful year 2015 was, we are so excited for all of the plans we have here at Steven & Laurent for 2016 and can't wait to hare them with you all. I wanted to start off the year with a post sharing with you 5 Bumble & Bumble products you must try this year. Let's get started!

BB Full Potential

The Full Potential range is new to Bumble and Bumble, each of the products have been designed to help create fuller and stronger hair so if you have been quite mean to your hair lately with over styling and over processing then this is one for you to try. Let's get your hair back into tip top condition!

Don't Blow It

Always love the idea of leaving your hair to just dry naturally but hate the outcome once you go through with it? My hair is rather frizzy so if I just leave it to dry it ends up looking little hagrid from Harry Potter but not anymore, I've been using Don't Blow It styling cream when I fancy just having a lazy hair day and it's transformed my hair routine. I can now actually stand my hair in it's natural state because this cream ensures my locks are frizz free and looks gorgeous, it requires little effort and is a must have for those days you want to avoid heat styling.

Surf Infusion

This spray is actually another product I love to use with Don't Blow It, Surf Infusion is a salt-in-oil innovation, this mellow mix of tropical oils and texturising sea salts creates soft, sea-tossed waves with sheen. You can use this anytime, either before styling on damp hair or on dry hair to add some more texture it's very lightweight and creates the most beautiful beachy waves.

Hairdressers Invisible Oil

This is a product everyone needs, it's transformed my hair over the past year and I can't live without it. Invisible Oil helps flyaways disappear without leaving the hair greasy or heavy. It's an oil you can use anytime, to soften, smoothe and reduce frizz, tame flyaways, detangle and strengthen hair against breakage. Perfect!

Sunday Shampoo

I don't know about you but I'm pretty lazy when it comes to washing my hair, I wash it twice a week and I do use quite a lot of products so by using something like the Sunday Shampoo it's really going to ensure that hair is squeaky clean from all of those products you've been using. This weekly shampoo is like a little hair detox, it's ideal for product junkies and infrequent washers like me.

Which will you be picking up next time your in the salon?

Bumble and Bumble Dryspun Finish

bbdryspun

It seems that the only hair products I use these days are by Bumble and Bumble and my gosh are they fabulous... I don't think I've come across anything I haven't liked yet and my latest obsession is the BB Thickening Dryspun Finish hair spray, something I didn't think I'd like and one of those products that always makes your hair look incredible after leaving the hairdressers. I did worry I wasn't going to be able to make this work for me, I have quite a dry scalp when I use dry shampoo type products and can be quite sensitive to them also so when I found out this worked well for me it made it's way into my weekly hair routine!

The BB Dryspun Finish is basically a dry shampoo and a finishing hairspray rolled into one, it creates instant fullness and texture to my lifeless 3 day hair and gives it the life it needs without weighing it down or making it feel heavy. This product can be used on all hair types, I have quite thick hair although it can be very flat so it really works well adding that extra oomph and it's also appropriate for colour treated hair thankfully.

I like to use this either straight after blowdrying if I'm after a little more texture or after a couple of days when my hair starts to look a little limp and lifeless, it's perfect to spray onto freshly curled locks as it gives that extra body and texture without making it look crispy or too 'done' like some hair sprays can sometimes do. I really love this finishing spray and I'd highly recommend it if you have thin or lifeless hair that needs some texture and fullness without the backcombing and heavy feeling.

If you're struggling with flat and lifeless hair then ask in the salon for a try of the Bumble and Bumble Dryspun spray, it's pretty fabulous!
